Bedroom Energy Refresher

Your bedroom is symbolic of so many important aspects of human emotion. The bed is a place for rest, recovery, intimacy, introspection and escape. The room itself is an extension of the bed, and holds similar roles. You refresh and define yourself in your bedroom. It's the retreat at the end of the day, where you let go of everything and allow yourself to finally stop.

Your body - and especially your mind - needs to recover from the stresses of the day. The bedroom should be your oasis, where the problems and challenges are put away, and you recharge for another day. If you don't feel that complete sense of peace when you are in your bedroom, or feel refreshed when you wake, then your emotional and physical life may suffer as a result.

Think about the feeling you get when you go on a spoil-yourself vacation and enter a gorgeous hotel room with warm colors, beautiful decor, clean sheets, and no clutter. You feel... "Ahhh". You sleep like a baby, you and your partner are connected deeply and passionately, and you just feel completely relaxed.

Wouldn't you agree that the bedroom is the most important room in your home if you could just feel that... "Ahhh" at the beginning and end of every day? Your entire emotional, functional and physical life would improve dramatically.

But, back to reality. Your bedroom walls are contractor white, damaged and dirty. There's kid's toys in every corner. There's piles of to-do laundry on the floor. Cobwebs on the brass and wood ceiling fan. And mis-matched bedspread and pillows in a twisted pile on the bed. This chaos encroaches directly upon your emotional and physical state. Forget about meaningful love making or restful relaxation at the end of your day. This is just the way it is because you don't know what to do about it.

As you follow these steps, envision the feeling you get from that gorgeous hotel room when you first walk in. The goal is Ahhh.

Step 1. Clear the clutter
Step 2. Rearrange or remove
Step 3. Replace or re-face
Step 4. Color and theme
Step 5. Set and follow Rules

Step 1. Clear the clutter
This is the easiest part. Don't make a new place for the clutter, just get it out of the bedroom for now. Put it in a guest room and deal with it when you can. Just clear the cluttered energy and clear your mind instantaneously! This includes photos cluttering the dresser tops, magazines or books in piles, toys, piles of clothes, stuffed animals, etc. Go for nothing on the surface tops except basics. Clean everything you can, including the carpet.

Step 2. Rearrange or remove
Anything that is only there as a catch-all for photos, magazines, trinkets and such, and not serving an important purpose should be removed. Put it in that guest room. Arrange your bed so that it's easily approachable from both sides. Have two bedside tables (one on each side), and avoid having the bed in a direct line with the door. Arrange the remaining necessary and fully functional furniture balanced around the room. If possible, leave a stage - an open floor space large enough to lay down and stretch your body.

Step 3. Replace or re-face
Fix or replace broken items including light bulbs, handles, clocks, trim, etc. If you have old or cheap looking dressers or furniture, try to replace it with something you love that makes you feel good. If your furniture is functional, you can paint it or have it painted to look like something from a catalog or showroom.

Step 4. Color and theme
Color is the key. (Learn more about color schemes) Once you're chosen your colors, consider coordinating bedding and draperies. Remove artwork that clashes with the colors and theme.
Creating a theme using color and texture is the most effective way to get swept away when you enter your room. A theme is created by referencing a style, such as Tuscan, Mountain Lodge, Asian, Contemporary, etc. You don't have to be a designer to create your theme. Just pick up some inspirational magazines and copy them in your room. Some themes require special wall treatments such as plaster, venetian plaster, colorwash (for that old world look), mural art and furniture decorating. Definitely have this step performed by a Decorative Painting professional such as G.Go Decorative. The nice thing about having the walls re-done, is it will force you to clear out everything and start anew!

Step 5. Set and follow Rules
Set family rules like: Kids toys are to be put away every day. No piles. Keep the surfaces clear of clutter. Make the bed in the morning for a feeling of order. Set emotional rules: Don't go to bed angry. No discussing work plans or stresses in the bedroom. Follow a plan to keep the room fresh and clean: Change sheets often. Dust and vacuum often. Strive to keep the lighting soft and the air clean. Open windows, drapes, and use candles or essential oil to fragrance the space.

If you could only do 1 or 2 of the above steps, at least Clear the Clutter. Then, if you change your Color and Theme, everything else will happen on its own.

The bedroom is the heart of your home. Take care of it and watch your entire life dramatically improve!
